Who we are:

The Council on International Education and Exchange (CIEE) is a nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization that transforms lives and builds bridges between individuals and nations through study abroad and international exchange experiences that help people develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.

Why work with us:

  • You will change the world. CIEE builds bridges between different people, different countries, and different cultures. We help young people participate in high-quality international exchange and study abroad programs that bring the world together. We change lives, our alumni change the world. Be part of the change!
  • You will be part of a fast-paced, international, diverse, and collaborative team of professionals. CIEE operates the largest nonprofit network of study-abroad locations, with facilities and staff in 26 countries.  Additionally, we help international participants from over 130 countries come to the USA each year.  Committed to excellence and solving whatever problem the world throws at them, CIEE professionals work on international teams and are dedicated to advancing our 75-year-old mission to make the world a more peaceful place.

Program Description:

CIEE partners with an independent boarding school to offer fall trimester abroad programs. Because we want students to transition seamlessly back into their USA math classes when they return to campus, we are seeking a USA-based teacher to offer math instruction following the school’s math curriculum during these study abroad programs. Math classes will be taught remotely to students in multiple locations, complementing a robust local curriculum that explores other topic areas with in-person instructors.

Math classes will be taught in English in Canvas, CIEE’s learning management system, and via video calls. Students are accustomed to rigorous college preparatory instruction. Math levels include Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Calculus AB. We may hire multiple instructors for different levels based on availability.

Who you are:

The math instructor is responsible for planning and teaching three one-hour synchronous sessions for each math level every week. They will also create asynchronous assignments and adapt, administer, and grade the school’s assessments.

Our goal is to have these classes be interactive and engaging—not lectures. Students should work with the instructor and each other to practice essential skills. A working knowledge of the technical tools and teaching strategies that will actively engage remote students is essential to this role.

CIEE and the school will provide training and instructional materials. To accommodate students in different time zones, classes will be taught during the USA morning. CIEE will discuss exact timing with finalists to accommodate their schedules; for example, it may be possible to teach these classes before the USA school day begins.

 What you'll do:

  • Before the program (July and August 2024):
    1. Review curricular materials provided by the school.
    2. Engage in training calls with the school and CIEE.
    3. Set up courses in Canvas using CIEE’s templates.
    4. Plan lessons and prepare assignments and assessments in Canvas.

  • During the program (Late August-November 2024):
    1. Plan and teach three one-hour synchronous sessions for each math level every week. Approximately one hour of prep per level week is expected.
    2. Administer and provide feedback on formative assessments in Canvas. Approximately 30 minutes of grading per level per week is expected.
    3. Adapt, administer, and grade the school’s summative assessments in Canvas.
    4. Participate in regular check-ins with the school and CIEE to discuss successes, questions, and challenges. Keep both institutions informed of student progress to ensure objectives are met.

  • After the program (November 2024):
    1. Enter final student grades in Canvas no later than one week after the final class.
    2. Share any notes about student progress (unique pacing, areas of challenge, etc.) in writing so that the students’ winter term math teachers can be informed.
    3. Engage in a debriefing call with CIEE to help us identify what worked well and opportunities for improvement with this model.

What you’ll bring:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching high school math in the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and/or teaching certification strongly preferred
  • Experience teaching online and working with an LMS (e.g., Canvas)
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and support diverse students
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues using digital tools
  • Strong intercultural communication skills

Application:

  • Short cover letter highlighting why you’re suitable for the position
  • Resume
  • Three references who can speak to your skill as a classroom teacher
